What You Don't Know Can Kill You: Health Insurance Limitations

What You Don't Know Can Kill You: Health Insurance Limitations Health insurance often requires a mountain of paperwork that has a lot of fine print. Unfortunately, this means that few people read their plans thoroughly nor do they fully understand what their plan covers or does not cover. Here are some common limitations in health insurance coverage that you should know. Some of the most shocking health insurance limitations are found in the the fine print holes in the insurance policy. For instance, many people have found that their health insurance did not cover a routine or necessary medical procedure because they did not receive an authorization code prior to the procedure or the hospital did not correctly fill out the paperwork. Your medical claim can be denied simply because the hospital used odd codes for your treatment. While any claims denied by the insurance company can be disputed, this process is not only tedious, but time-consuming and draining, especially fo...

7 Things Seniors (and Everyone Else) Should Know About FDIC Insurance Older Americans put their money… and their trust… in FDIC-insured bank accounts because they want peace of mind about the savings they've worked so hard over the years to accumulate. Here are a few things senior citizens should know and remember about FDIC insurance. 1. The basic insurance limit is $100,000 per depositor per insured bank. Your deposits in separately chartered banks are separately insured, even if the banks are affiliated, such as belonging to the same parent company. 2. You may qualify for more than $100,000 in coverage at one insured bank if you own deposit accounts in different ownership categories. There are several different ownership categories, but the most common for consumers are si...

Californians Can Now Pay Cash For Health Insurance At 7-Eleven

The largest publicly run health plan in the nation, L.A. Care, will allow customers who do not have traditional bank accounts to pay their health insurance premiums with cash. One in four Americans who were previously uninsured and eligible for federal insurance subsidies don't have a bank account, relying instead on prepaid debit cards, money orders and cash to pay bills, according to a study by Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. After advocates for low-income consumers raised concerns to the Department of Health and Human Services over how so-called unbanked households would pay their monthly insurance premiums, the Obama administration ordered health plans to accept payment methods that didn't require a credit card or checking account. "It's as quick as buying a Slurpee," said Danny Shader, the founder and CEO of  PayNearMe , the for-profit company that established the electronic cash transaction network. Starting this week, customers of L.A....

Entrepreneurs Want Business and Medicine Separate for Rural Clinics

Entrepreneurs Want Business and Medicine Separate for Rural Clinics Currently, clinics must be owned by doctors to operate in Oregon, which creates a barrier for rural areas, where small-staffed doctor’s offices and clinics require doctors to divide too much time between practicing medicine and running a successful business. Chris Gray Rural Oregon faces a healthcare shortage, which despite numerous attempts at a governmental fix with loan repayments, rural scholarship programs and a controversial and generous tax credit to rural providers, just seems to becoming worse. Two young entrepreneurs think they have a partial solution. Currently, a country doctor not only practices medicine, but he or she has to run a business. To protect business people from interfering with medical decisions, nearly all Oregon clinics must be majority-owned by physicians. The owners of Oakridge’s new  Orchid Health Clinic , Oliver Alexander and Orion Falvey, wan...

Traditional birth attendants in Mexico: Advantages and inadequacies of care for normal deliveries

Imagen
Abstract In Mexico, traditional birth attendants (TBAs) are an essential resource for health care, especially in small rural communities where they attend approximately 45% of all deliveries. Both rural and urban women seek care with the TBAs because, amongst other things, they share the same cultural codes. In this study, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze the concepts, resources and process of care during birth in rural areas of the state of Morelos. Results show that the socio-economic characteristics of the TBAs are similar to those of the patients, that they share the same precarious living conditions, and the resources to which they have access for providing care during births. When choosing a TBA as a health care provider, both the economic aspect and the importance of a shared symbolism come into play. We observed advantages in some of the traditional practices which should be incorporated into the medical system, for example protection through...
